More sketches...

I just finished this drawing of Pansy as she was falling asleep on my bed, she had one eye open and then her head dropped on her paws signaling the end of the drawing.

I'm really enjoying drawing with black and white charcoal on toned paper. I paint the paper with a pastel coating to make a sand-papery surface which is fun to work on. The middle tone really helps me produce something effective in less time than on a white or black surface as I only need to add highlights and low-lights.

I copied this quickly from the illustration in an advertisement inside the Drawing Magazine.

  1. You are good at quick sketches! I like that you paint the surface of the paper yourself to get the mid tone, it gives lovely rough edges. What did you use to paint it? I'm not familiar with what you said is a "pastel coating." I'd love to try it sometime.

  2. Thanks for the comment! :) I like the rough edges too. The coating is a primer called colourfix primer and is a recent discovery of mine. Someone commenting on my blog told me about it, and now I wish I knew about it sooner!

It's just like paint with sand in it so when you paint it on a surface it gives it a rough texture perfect for pastel and charcoal. You can get it in one of many colours and even modify the colour yourself by mixing in more paint.

Here is a link to where you can buy it. http://www.artspectrum.com.au/colourfix.html
