Teacup painting

Last night I had an idea for a painting and started painting it in my head as I fell asleep. This is what it looks like after four hours of painting today.

The hardest part of painting teacups is getting proportions right, it's so hard to get things accurate. You think it all looks ok, and then turn the canvass upside down and everything goes out of kilter! Something I don't like about this painting is that when looked at from a distance or in a thumbnail image it looks flat. I think it is because I haven't got enough contrast and my values are all on the same range.

I think I might do another painting like this tomorrow and see if I can get more depth and contrast into it.

White Horse Inspiration

I have a new and exciting commission to work on! It is to be very large pastel painting of a white horse in blues and grays. I have been given the liberty to decide what horse and what posture to paint which is nice and gives me liberty to do something inspired. I have been looking on the internet for paintings and photos of white horses to inspire me and to get a general idea of the sort of thing I will be doing. Here are a whole lot of pictures that inspire me, I will try and credit owners where known.

The Bathroom Again

Several posts ago I hinted that I had a bathroom themed painting underway. Well it has been sitting on my drawing  board for weeks and I haven't done any improvements to it and don't think I will so I will share it as is. It is mostly finished anyway, I just wasn't happy with the cat, Pansy.

I used pastel on grey pastel paper.

The Queen Mother--video

Since I have almost finished reading a giant book about this lovely lady, the official biography of the Queen Mother (she lived from 1900 to 2001, and it takes a big book to span a whole century!).

Here is a quick sketch I did of her. Took 30 minutes, used white and black pastel pencils on black paper. I made another speed movie too. Not very good though as I don't have a tripod any more.
